My Ideas, or Are They?

As I've said in the previous post, I'm trying to write urban fantasy, so there has to be a fantasy element. Trying to sort out the world building, and the rules of my fantasy aspect is a little harder than I thought it would be.

My Dad was the one who got me into reading, and over the years, we've had lots of discussions regarding books. Several times he has told me that he would love to try writing a book himself, but he thinks he would just end up writing something he's already read.

This is kind of the problem I'm having now. Not everything, but some details I come up with that I think will work I realise are part of something I've read by someone else. I don't want to steal anyone's ideas, obviously, but trying to come up with the details is a little difficult. I don't want to end up writing something that is an amalgamation of everything I've read. I need to think harder.

  1. This reminds me of something I read somewhere. It said that everything can pretty much be called a copy of something else. People say Rowling started the wizarding genre but there were other important people before her. And others think that Meyer is the starter of the vampire fiction. What about Anne Rice? It's impossible to be entirely original. You just have to try and twist the idea and make it your own. That's what I think anyhow. But a published author probably has better advice :)

  2. I agree with Kate. Everything is inspired by something. I think even if your ideas are similar to something you've read, your writing style and your unique perspective will give them newness.

By the way, I love your template.. very pretty.

  3. I suppose you're both right. It's just I don't want to take a whole aspect from someone else. Tiny details are my main problem right now. Like the colour of the clothes a certain person wears, and then remembering and thinking "Oh no, that's like such-and-such...". It's minor details that I'm coming up with, but I guess I just have to be reasonable - is that really stealing, or am I being OTT? And does something as small as that really matter? I get it, but it's... I'd rather try come up with all myself. I'm always finding flaws in myself ;)
